Freedom To Read Foundation Joins "CDA II" Case As Amicus

The Freedom To Read Foundation (FTRF), the American Library Association's (ALA) sibling organization, joined a "friend of the court brief" filed by 20 organizations January 11 in the "CDA II" case. Others on the brief include the Association of American Publishers and American Society of Newspaper Editors. "The brief discusses the effect of this law on the ability of people to use the Internet," said Judith Krug, director of ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom and executive director of FTRF. "Many of the same issues we dealt with in [the Communications Decency Act, which was ruled unconstitutional] are back." Krug said that ALA itself was unable to join the brief, because there was not enough time for the organization's Executive Board to reach a quorum. "I think that we all felt that as long as the foundation was there, the interests of the profession were being carried forward."
