Staff -- Library Journal, 1/11/1999
The Chicago Public Library (CPL) is the recipient of a $50,000 grant supplied by the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). The money will fund CPL's Expanding Horizons of North American Indian Literature program, specifically to present readings by North American Indian authors and buttress the library's collection of that literature. Utah is also providing funding to beef up its libraries' Native American collections. The state's Museums Association is providing $10,000 of the funding awarded by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services program to two Indian tribes for libraries.Along with the CPL grant above, several other Illinois libraries reaped funding supplements. The Round Lake Area Library has been awarded a grant of approximately $35,000 from the state's General Revenue and Live & Learn funds to enlarge its collection. The additional funding will be applied to the purchase of books, videos, audiobooks, and CDs. Lastly, the North Suburban Library System, Wheeling, IL, is assisting ten libraries with its annual Innovation Grants. Among this year's recipients is the Ela Public Library, which will use the money to sponsor an "open mike" poetry program for budding bards. The Indian Trails Public Library will host an exhibit on the Holocaust.
