Pregnant Mother Arrested For Overdue Books / Audio Tape

Staff -- Library Journal, 3/2/1998

A pregnant woman was arrested February 18 for failing to return four overdue items to the Old Town Public Library, ME. Local police issued a warrant for Laura Winters, a pregnant mother of seven, after she failed to appear in court to face theft charges. The library has tried in vain for six months to regain the items -- three books and an audio program -- which Winters checked out in August of 1997. An angry Winters told the Portland Press Herald February 21 that "if [they] don't have anything better to do than arrest a mom with seven kids who takes her kids to story hour then there's something wrong.
