ALA Appoints Diversity Officer

Sandra Rios Balderrama has been appointed diversity officer at the American Library Association (ALA), effective January 8. Balderrama was supervising librarian for recruitment, staff training, and retention at the Oakland Public Library, CA, a position she held since September 1995. She began at Oakland in 1991, coming from the Berkeley Public Library where she had been since 1986. She is president of REFORMA--an ALA-affiliated national association to promote library services to Spanish speakers--and is a member of ALA's Spectrum Initiative Steering Committee.
