Local Libraries Getting Unusually Big Gifts, Times Reports
Staff -- Library Journal, 1/5/1998
In an article published Dec. 26 ("Big Gift for a Small-Town Library"), the New York Times reported that local libraries have been receiving unusually large gifts this year--notably the Skidompha Public Library in Damariscotta, Maine. It has received a $550,000 gift from Barbara Cooney, an author of 109 children's books and a longtime Maine resident. Her gift came on the condition that the town raise at least $250,000 to build a new library. The library, which has a $90,000 annual budget, has been located since 1922 in a cramped, deteriorating house built in 1803.
