E-Rate Faces Hearing
Staff -- Library Journal, 3/5/2001
The E-rate program for telecomm discounts may be threatened by President Bush's proposal to consolidate federal education technology programs into a single block grant distributed to state education agencies. On March 8, the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet has scheduled a hearing entitled: "Technology and Education: A Review of Federal, State, and Private Sector Programs." According to the American Library Association's Washington Office, the hearing will likely focus on the E-rate, and past criticisms of the program are likely to be aired. ALA urged library advocates to ask their representatives to contact Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) by March 5 about signing onto a "Dear colleague" letter supporting the E-rate.
