ALA Backs "Privacy Pledge"

Staff -- Library Journal, 2/26/2001

As part of Privacy Coalition, a nonpartisan coalition, the American Library Association has announced its support for a new privacy standard, "The Privacy Pledge." The pledge includes support of "Fair Information Practices," including the right to notice, consent, security, access, correction, use limitations, and redress when information is improperly used; independent enforcement and oversight; promotion of privacy enhancing technologies that limit collection of personal information; legal restrictions on surveillance technologies; and a solid foundation of federal privacy safeguards. Member groups of the coalition include the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Center for Media Education, Media Access Project, Privacy International, and Privacy Rights Clearinghouse.
