State Net Obscenity Law Proposed in Montana

Staff -- Library Journal, 1/22/2001

Even though the Children's Internet Protection Act would require libraries receiving federal funds for computers and Internet access to use filters, some states are continuing to pursue their own filtering laws. In Montana, according to the Associated Press, SB 139 would require every public library to adopt a policy to prevent children from getting access to Internet obscenity, with one option being use of filters. SB 140, an exception to the law mandating confidentiality of library records, would allow parents to find out which books their children under the age of 18 have checked out.
