Fairfax in Joint MLS Program
Staff -- Library Journal, 1/15/2001
The Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL), VA, has launched a joint program with the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, that will allow its staff to pursue a Master of Library Science degree (MLS). According to the library, the partnership is known as the Fairfax Cohort Program because "participants will work toward their MLS degree as a group." Students will be allowed to take two classes per semester, with a preference for completing the degree within two years. To assist participants, FCPL provides two hours of educational leave per week as well as overtime and $200 tuition reimbursement to those successfully completing the program, while the university is offering Fairfax staffers reduced tuition. To further encourage enrollment in the master's curriculum, the Friends of the Kings Park Library have donated $5000 for scholarships.
