D.C. Main Library to Be Renovated?
Staff -- Library Journal, 1/8/2001
The main public library in Washington, DC, site of the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting, is in dire need of major renovation, and city officials are wondering whether to update the library or consider an alternative. According to the Washington Post, District of Columbia Public Library Director Molly Raphael supports the idea of an expanded library and cultural center, with a new auditorium, cafe, and other amenities. However, some city officials have also encouraged her to consider selling the building -- designed by Mies van der Rohe -- and building a new library nearby, possibly on the site of the Washington, DC Convention Center, which is scheduled to be demolished in two years. The library has hired a consulting firm to survey the community and issue a building plan later this year.
