Paterson, NJ Library Fires Director, May Privatize

Staff -- Library Journal, 3/13/2000

The Board of Trustees of the Paterson Free Public Library, NJ, has fired Director Kwaku Amoabeng after a study called the overall library service "pathetic." According to the February 29 Record, the board is considering privatizing the library by hiring Library Systems and Services Inc. (LSSI), which now runs the nearby Jersey City library system. Amoabeng was hired by the library in 1986 and became director in 1993. The report stated that he provided no plans to improve the library system and showed no leadership skills, as circulation and attendance declined. The director's supporters cited his work in automating the system and accused the city mayor of making the library a political issue.
