NY Regents Requests A Lot More Funding
Staff -- Library Journal, 2/28/2000
The New York State Board of Regents is calling for a 20-fold increase in state aid to libraries over the next five years. The Regents primarily are concerned with the need to upgrade libraries physically in preparation for the installation of computers and other high-tech accoutrements. According to press reports, New York State provides roughly $80 million annually in library funding, only $800,000 of which is applied toward construction. The Regents now claim that $90 million for construction and renovation alone is necessary to revamp aging library facilities, 60 percent of which are 50 years old or more.
