British Library Appoints First Woman Chief Executive
Staff -- Library Journal, 2/14/2000
The British Library has appointed its first woman chief executive, a university librarian and former management consultant. Lynne Brindley, currently pro-vice chancellor and librarian at Leeds University, will replace outgoing chief executive Brian Lang July 1. She also is the first professional librarian to hold the position since the British Library separated from the British Museum in 1972. Heated competition for the position included candidates from inside and outside the library profession, including the former controller of BBC Radio 4, James Boyle. Brindley disclosed that her salary is between 80,000 and 100,000 pounds.
