Clinton's $173M Federal Library Budget: Funding Increases in Some Areas

Staff -- Library Journal, 2/14/2000

President Clinton's budget request for FY01 contains $173 million in federal library funds. This federal funding, for the Office of Library Services within the Institute of Museum and Library Services, represents an increase of $18,500,163 over current funding for core programs and competitive National Leadership Grants."We're glad to see the bump-up. Any increase is a positive sign," said Lynne Bradley, deputy executive director of the American Library Association's (ALA) Washington Office. "At the same time, there's no Title 6 [funding school library materials]. That's a disappointment for school libraries." Such funding is expected to be restored by Congress. Also, the current budget proposal would increase funding for the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) from $1.3 million to $1.5 million.
