College Librarian Released from Chinese Jail
Staff -- Library Journal, 1/31/2000
Yongyi Song, the Dickinson College (Carlisle, PA) librarian detained in China since August under suspicion of espionage, was to have been released January 28 and was scheduled to arrive in the United States January 29, according to a January 28 Associated Press story. Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) said he was told of the release by Chinese Ambassador Li Zhao Xing. Specter said he believes Chinese authorities are releasing Song to try to curry favor with Congress, which will decide whether to grant China permanent most-favored-nation trade status.
