Philly's Shelkrot Losing $10K Foundation Pension
Staff -- Library Journal, 1/31/2000
A Philadelphia city solicitor has determined that Philadelphia Free Library Director Elliot Shelkrot can no longer accept an annual $10,000 contribution to his pension fund from the Library Foundation. As library director, Shelkrot automatically is placed in charge of the Foundation, a privately funded operation, for which he -- and all other directors before him -- received the additional money in his pension fund and the use of a car. The supplementary funding has been determined to violate a city charter that bans official employees from receiving additional compensation for essentially doing their jobs, for which they receive a salary (in Shelkrot's case, $170,000). Whether Shelkrot will have to forfeit the Foundation money placed in his pension thus far has yet to be determined.
