King to Publish Novels Online

Staff -- Library Journal, 3/13/2000

The burgeoning concept of reading books online is getting a major boost thanks to best selling horror writer Stephen King, who is releasing a new novella, Riding the Bullet, exclusively as an electronic text. The book will be "published" March 14 by Simon & Schuster Online as a download that will cost his legions of fans a mere $2.50 to enjoy. "I'm curious to see what sort of response there is and whether or not this is the future," King told the press. While King is not the first author to test the properties of cyberspace as a publishing medium, he is certainly the biggest. King wrote the story while recovering from his highly publicized accident in which a driver, reportedly distracted by his pet, struck the author as he hiked along the road.
