Children's Author/Illustrator Kathleen Hale and Mad's Don Martin Die
Staff -- Library Journal, 1/31/2000
Kathleen Hale, the British children's book author and illustrator who gained fame with her series of 19 picture books featuring characters Orlando and the Marmalade Cat, died Januray 26 in Bristol. She was 101. Jumping from the sublime to the ridiculous, Don Martin, MAD magazine illustrator and founding father -- and one of the unsung heros of America's youth for four decades -- died of cancer early in January at age 68. After getting into legal issue with MAD over reprint rights, Martin left after 30 years to join the staff of rival publication Cracked in 1987.
