Small Press Month Begins in March

Staff -- Library Journal, 3/1/1999

March 1 marks the beginning of the third annual Small Press Month celebration. With the merging of many of publishing's Goliaths and profits taking precedent over releasing quality books and discovering new authors, small presses have become more important players in keeping the enterprising spirit of American publishing alive. "Due to the growth and the increasing sophistication of small presses, the public has more materials available, tailored to a specific need," said Barbara Hoffert, National Book Critics Circle president and LJ's Book Review editor, who added "small presses are in the position to address local or niche interests in a way that big presses cannot. They serve as an excellent reminder that books are books, not products."
