The "U" is for Unanimous

Staff -- Library Journal, 1/25/1999

The "U" now stands for unanimous: James Joyce's masterwork Ulysseshas again taken the top slot in a survey naming the greatest novels of the 20th century. Sponsored by the British bookstore chain Waterstone's, the poll yielded startlingly similar results as the Modern Library's much ballyhooed list published in 1998, with Ulysses taking top honors and F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby again coming in second. Rounding out the top five are Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, George Orwell's 1984, and Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse. According to the London press, the books were selected by a group of 47 authors, critics, and media personalities.
