SalonPicks Best Books of 1998

Salon the artsy online E-zine has selected its ten best books of 1998. Book Editor Laura Miller said that the selections are "decidedly personal," and claims she and other editors chose the books "regardless of how much publicity they've gotten or how many copies cold" The titles are:

Fiction:

  • Birds of America by Lorrie Moore (Knopf)
  • The Voyage of the Narwhal by Andrea Barrett (Norton)
  • Blindness by Jose Saramago (Harcourt Brace)
  • Starting Out in the Evening by Brian Morton (Crown)
  • Thirst by Ken Kalfus (Milkweed)

Nonfiction:

  • The Professor and the Madman by Simon Winchester (HarperCollins)
  • A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasar (S&S)
  • At Home with the Marquis de Sade by Francine du Plessix Gray (S&S)
  • A Slant of Sun by Beth Kephart (Norton)
  • We Want To Inform You that Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families by Philip Gourevitch (FSG)
