Amazon.com Launching Foreign Sites

Staff -- Library Journal, 10/19/1998

When German-based media titan Bertelsmann AG recently announced its plan to acquire 50 percent of the ailing online bookselling operation barnesandnoble.com, (see previous LJ Digital story), major competitor Amazon.com's stock dropped 14 percent. Now, Amazon has struck back at the heart of the enemy camp by launching two new online bookselling sites in Germany and the UK on October 15. The sites, Amazon.de and Amazon.co.uk, were formerly operated by ABC Bucherdienst and Bookpages, Ltd., in Germany and the UK, respectively. Amazon.com is extending the same services and discounts to its European customers that have proven wildly successful in the United States.
