Former Wiley Chairman Leaves Rich Legacy
Staff -- Library Journal, 2/9/1998
W. Bradford Wiley, 87, died last week after serving as chairman of the last major family-owned publishing house, John Wiley & Sons, from 1956 until his retirement in 1993. He is largely credited with maintaining the house's independence through decades that saw mergers and acquisitions put an end to family-run publishers. That was made possible in large part through the financial success of the company, which was an early and innovative scientific and technical publisher and a proponent of international sales. His son Bradford Wiley 2d is current chairman.
